Alford 1, Thomas (b. 27 Dec 1672, d. 1708)
Note: In 1908 Josiah George Alford, Honorary Canon of Bristol, wrote "Alford Family Notes" in which he traced Alford families from 1160 to the late 1800s. In his Introduction he wrote that -

"Alford is a surname.....the ancient form of which was Aldeford, signifying 'Old Ford', whence Aldford, then the modern form Alford.....The Lords of Aldford are mentioned in the Cheshire Domesday Book.....There was in ancient times a castle
overlooking the old ford across the river Dee, about four miles above Chester.....In 1160 the command of this castle was given to Robertus, Miles, a descendant of de Bigot.....who thus became Lord of Aldford and the founder of the family that
has since borne that name....."

"Alford Family Notes" go on to record that 'the name Alford occurs in Somerset in Domesday Book.....and occurs as early as 1327 in the Subsidy Rolls of Somerset.....'

Twelve family charts are produced in the Notes commencing with Robertus from about 1160. The first Thomas Alford recorded was about 1300 and many, many more Thomases appear during the following centuries. The first Reverend Thomas Alford was in
1438 and likewise there have been countless more Reverend Thomases and Reverend Alfords since.

For the purposes of these Family Tree writings, Chart 9 of the Notes has been adopted as the starting point. It introduces the family of Alfords of Western Zoyland, Somerset, of which Henry Alford, born in the early 1500s, 'is the first of this
family whose name appears in the registers of that parish'. He apparently died in 1575 from 'troubles in connection with the Spanish Armada'.

Henry and his wife Julian Woodroffe had a son Matthew born in 1567, a daughter Joan born 1569 and another child whose identity is uncertain. Matthew married Mary Trevillian on 18 October 1590 and a son Thomas was born in 1599. He married Ales
Sealey in 1628 and that union had three daughters. However Ales died in 1635 and Thomas married Mary Somers, which resulted in three children being born - Ann in 1636, Thomas in 1638 and Richard in 1641. The latter married Letitia Kaysar and
they continued the family custom by naming their son Thomas and it is from this ancestor, designated Thomas Alford 1 in these writings, that the Sellwood Family Tree commences.

The following information concerning Thomas Alford 1 was extracted from 'Alford Family Notes' -

"Baptised 27 December 1672 at Weston Zoyland. In him the family commenced that clerical career.....which continued through six generations" to the beginning of the 20th Century when 'Alford Family Notes' were written. Thomas "matriculated at
All Saints College, Oxford in 1688 and proceeded to MA in 1695. He became Vicar of Curry Rivel in 1697 and married Frances Powell on 10 November 1698". They had childrfen - Letitia in 1699, Richard in 1701, Thomas in 1703, Samuel in 1705 and
Marmaduke in 1708. Thomas Alford 1 died at the young age of 36 years and was buried at Curry Rivel. His wife retired as a widow to Farway, Devonshire, where, after 30 years and at age 61 years, she died and was buried there.
