Richardson, Lewis (b. 22 Feb 1840, d. 10 Jul 1925)

Note: These Notes have been condensed from a comprehensive Family Tree and History compiled by Blair Crowe. Searching of records in Sydney has resulted in further information being added.

Lewis Richardson arrived at Moreton Bay on the 'Ascendant' on 19 June 1858 and was listed as aged 18 years, labourer, from Essex, Church of England, able to read and write. Brought up in a rural environment he was keen to settle on the land and
considered the Dawson area in Queensland. However because of the murder of the Frazer family at Hornet Bank Station by aborigines, he changed his mind and took work at Ipswich where he felled trees and cleared land for a Mr. Harris, earning 30
pounds per year.

Early records of Jondaryan Woolshed show that Lewis was employed there in 1863 as a bullock driver, later as a ploughman, then later as a contract carrier at that Station. He was also one of the first Cobb and Co drivers in the Jondaryan area.
The last recorded date of his activities at Jondaryan is 27 December 1867.

Lewis Richardson married Elizabeth Jounquay at Jondaryan Head Station on 17 February 1865. Leaving Jondaryan in the late 1860s, Lewis and Elizabeth slowly travelled west, apparently accompanying expansion of the railway system to Charleville.
When he settled there in about 1890 he opened a shop but this business was closed when Elizabeth died in 1894 when giving birth to her 17th child. Writings suggest it was her 18th child; even 22 pregnancies are mentioned.

Another activity in which Lewis became engaged was grazing. He held Gowrie Station for some time but was beaten by drought. He also established a vineyard, probably the first in South West Queensland, and made wine. Salting fish from the
Warrego River was another activity and he also built a bake oven. Lewis was well known for his 6 a.m. swims in the Warrego River, summer and winter, but on reaching 80 years of age he substituted cold showers.

Lewis Richardson was a very colourful figure who had a very colourful lifetime. He has been described as a Labourer, Carrier, Coach Driver, Hawker, Station Owner, Viticulturist and Storekeeper. After his wife died in 1894 Lewis married Alice
Lipsey, or May Alice Lipsey as recorded on his Death Certificate, but record has been found of a Louis Richardson marrying Mary Livesey on 24 December 1896. No more enlightening information has been found concerning this second wife.

Lewis's third marriage was to Mary [Marie according to Sydney records]Magdaline McConnell when he was 84 years of age. Searches show that occured on 16 May 1924. A Marie Magdaline Richardson died in Queensland on 18 September 1929 but her
parents are recorded as Frederick Wilhelm Hansen and Marie Hedwick Langemann. Nothing more conclusive has been found concerning her.

Jounquay, Daniel (b. 1811, d. 10 May 1896)
Note: Dan Jounquay is described in the Family History information supplied as -

"a ticket-of-leave man. After receiving permission to leave the Port Macquarie district in 1843 he went to Cecil Plains station on the Darling Downs shortly after it was opened up by H.S.Russell. It seems that Russell took him on as a bullocky
and he possibly helped cut the mountain track via Cunninghams Gap to Ipswich. [Searches in Sydney have found no confirmation of Daniel having been a convict].

"By 1849 he was an independant carrier, married to an 'Irish Orphan' from the 'Earl Grey', with a house and store at South Brisbane and plying between Brisbane, Ipswich and the Downs. He kept bullocks at the Gabba where the water never dried
up, so that South Brisbane became a meeting place for backblocks travellers.

"By 1865 Dan Jounquay had begun to follow the railway line that was extending west from Toowoomba. That year he married at Jondaryan."

McCartney, Ellen Jane (b. 1831, d. 1906)

Searches have found this to have been Ellen Jane McCartney on board the 'Earl Grey', which arrived in Sydney on 6 October 1848. The ship carried 20 listed passengers and 195 female Irish orphans aged between 15 years and 20 years with a few
aged 21 and 22.

Queensland for about 15 years. Perhaps therefore he had migrated to the colony in about 1865/66.

Ginn, William (b. 15 May 1833, d. 24 Jan 1897)
Note: William Ginn was born at Enniskillen, Northern Ireland on 15 May 1833. He died at Ipswich Qld on 24 January 1897 but records in Sydney do not show the names of his parents, merely 'Ginn' as his father.

It is thought that William Ginn married a Miss Graham in Sydney [date not known] before moving to Ipswich. However searches have failed to find a confirming record. It is also thought that mother Ginn and child died at childbirth and are buried
in the old cemetery at Ipswich. Again, searches have failed to find confirming records. Cemetery records should throw some light on this matter.

What has been found in NSW records in Sydney however is-

Birth - Hannah - Parents William Ginn and Ann

Reference 1851 1027/56

Birth - Emily - Parents William Ginn and Ann

Reference 1854 1610/52[or 53?]

Emily - Parents William Ginn and Ann

Reference 1854 5680/121C[or 131?]

Death - Ann E. Graham, 1854, age 18 years,

Reference 2178/41.

After a search of Ipswich cemetery records, requests for Certificates, using the above References, should throw some further light on these matters

William Ginn married Eliza Jane Costley on 5 April 1859 at the residence of George Meredith, Wesleyan Minister of Ipswich. They had 11 children details of whom and of some of their subsequent children are in handwritten Notes in Ginn/Hawson
Family Tree papers.

William and Eliza Jane's first son was Robert Ginn who married Elizabeth Bain Witham. They had two sons and three daughters, first son being William George Ginn who married Dora Mary Agnes Hawson [sometimes recorded as Agnes Mary Dora]. They
had five children one of whom was Valentine Walter Ginn [known as Walter Valentine] who married Merle Agnes Selwood.

Refer to the handwritten Notes for further information about the Descendants of William Ginn.

William Ginn made considerable contributions to the development of Queensland, particularly Ipswich, where a street appears to have been named after him - he resided at 1 Ginn Street. His first known activity was Manager of G.H.Wilson's Produce
Store, then partner in Ginn and Hooper Produce Store at Augathella. He later farmed Fairview Farm at Hampstead [near Purga, south of Ipswich] where one of his activities was to breed racehorses. He was also associated with a coal mine at
Hampstead.

In 1873 William Ginn became a member of Ipswich Show Committee. He was a Director of Queensland Woollen Manufacturing Company, Ipswich, in 1875, and a Director of Ipswich and West Moreton Permanent Building Society from 1877 until 1897.

William Ginn died at Ipswich on 24 January 1897. His Death Certificate could show the number of years he had been in Australia. Searches of shipping records could disclose evidence of his arrival.

Eliza Jane Ginn died at Ipswich on 19 August 1910. . Her parents are recorded as Charles Costley and Ellen Downey and her Death Certificate could show her age at death, place of birth and the number of years she had been in
Australia. Such information would open fruitful avenues for searching into her ancestory.
