Note: Frederick Augustus Hely, son of Colonel Forbes Francis Hely, was born in 1794. He was a descendant of a family whose origins "have been traced back to the Fifth Century and are thought to be descended from the King of Corc."
In 1812 Frederick married Georgina Lindsay Bucknell of Hollymount House, Ireland.. The family arrived in Sydney on the convict ship Isabella in 1823.Frederick had been an Army Captain and had been appointed Superintendent of Convicts at the
Colony of NSW. Surviving children for this couple at that time were Mary Joanna born 1819, Georgina Frances 1821 and Hovenden 1823. Later, Gertrude Jane was born in 1831 and Henry Lindsay in 1833. Other children appear to have been Frederick
died 1826, Alexander born and died 1824, Bingham born and died 1826 and George F. born and died 1827.
In 1824 Frederick applied for and was granted 1340 acres of land in the Central Coast area of NSW where he began farming as a first settler of that District and planted the first citrus fruit orchard. Correspondence has been found that in 1825
he applied for a grant of land for his son Hovenden Hely [aged 2 years] but the application was set aside. However by the 1828 Census Frederick Augustur Hely, his wife Georgina, residing at Upper Castlereagh Street, Sydney, with children Mary
9, Georgina 7 and Hovenden 5, were among the top few percentage of land owners in NSW - 6150 acres, 82 acres cleared, 46 acres cultivated, 196 cattle,350 sheep. In 1832 he also purchased land in Sydney, on which he commenced erecting a
residence of considerable prominence named "Engehurst", which had frontage to a new road to Rushcutters Bay, viz Glenmore Road, Paddington. In that area Hely Street and Hely Lane, both named after Frederick, are now named Heeley.
Frederick named his first farm "Wyoming", after which the suburb in the Gosford area has been named. Hely's Wyoming Cottage stands at the corner of Pacific Highway and Wyoming Road, Wyoming [Heritage Item 179]. Hely's original stables building
[now partially occupied as a residence] stands in Renwick Street, Wyoming [Heritage Item 177]. Hely's mausauleum, in which Frederick's body lies, stands facing Pacific Highway between those two buildings [Heritage Item 178]. All three were
designed by the eminent Colonial Architect John Verge.
After taking up the position of Superintendent of Convicts, Frederick occupied the following positions between 1825 and 1836 -
Justice of the Peace, Treadmill Investigation Committee, President of Board of Magistrates, Acting Superintendent of Police, Member of Board of Enquiry, Chairman of Ticket Of Leave Committee, Licencing Board, Land and Assignment Boards,
Australian Library, Foundation Director of Commercial Banking Co. of Sydney.
The substantial increase in numbers of convicts under Frederick's superintendence as the years went by, plus the pressures brought on by the other voluminous work activities listed above, had a telling effect of Frederick's health and he died
in Sydney of Apoplexy in 1836 aged 42 years. His body lies in his mausauleum at the Pacific Highway, Wyoming.
At Gosford there is an area known as Point Frederick, named after Frederick Augustus. There is a Hely Street, a Georgina Terrace and a Gertrude Street [named after Hovenden's wife]. Gosford's main street is Mann Street, named after Frederick's
son-in-law Captain Gother Kerr Mann. Gosford itself was first known as Fredericktown but the Governor of the day adopted Gosford, after the Earl of Gosford.
