Forster, Thomas (b. 1864, d. 6 Mar 1938)
Note: Children to this marriage were -

Thomas Murray

Neil Hurtle Winship

Leslie

Harry Gordon

Grace Hope

Further detail is contained in Joan Haigh's writings. She also has written -

"Tom Forster took formal possession of 'Gracedale', Maxwelton, North Queensland, on 5 April 1898.

"In 1900 he married Grace Margaret Pegler at Adavale, the groom aged 35 and his bride 21. Their daughter Hope Spence writes -

"Their honeymoon was a three weeks trip by buggy from Adavale to 'Gracedale'. For six years they lived in a two-roomed cottage with a verandah and a completely detached kitchen. During that time the four boys were born. Two slept head to toe in
one bed, the next in a cot and the baby in mother and dad's bed. The original cottage was still part of the homestead until it was demolished recently.

"The only white woman in the area was a rather unsavoury character who ran a wayside pub 20 miles away. The nearest doctor and railway in those days was at Hughenden, over 90 miles away - quite a jaunt by buggy".

Joan Haigh continued " Neil Forster, in supplying detail of interest about the family referred to the nickname his father bore for many years "Honest Tom". The name was given prominence by a man who ran a paper in Richmond, about 1920, one
Henry Maxwell, who was a member of the Labor team that contested the Shire elections. Prior to the elections he had a 'rundown' of the Opposition [mostly, if not all, graziers] in his paper and in this article he referred to Tom Forster as
"Honest Tom".

"Neil considers that the name originated a considerable time before that and probably Henry Maxwell got ot from the townspeople, many of whom would have been employed at 'Gracedale' over the years as stockmen, drovers, carriers, cooks,
housemaids etc. Neil writes "He was well named. I never knew him to do a single thing that was not fair and above board. He was plain HONEST."

Tom Forster was a member of the Flinders Shire Council based in Hughenden for a number of years prior to the formation of the Wyangarie Shire Council based in Richmond, which eventually became the Richmond Shire Council. He served on it from
its inception in January 1916 to December 1936 as Councillor and Deputy Chairman. Two of his sons, Murray and Neil, both carried on this Forster tradition, playing their part in Council affairs, following in their father's footsteps.

Tom Forster was also a Foundation Member of the Clutha Picnic Race Club and became President about 1915 and held that position until he died. Again Murray and then Neil followed on in the role of President, a position which Neil held from 1947
to 1965 when he left the district. Just prior to this the Clutha Picnic Race Club name was changed to the Richmond Amateur Race Club and Murray's eldest son John was elected President and is still in the Chair [1972?]

Further detail is contained in Joan Haigh's writings. She also has written -

"In supplying details of her particular branch of the family, Beth Merritt Nickolls mentioned that her father was born in Tasmania and spent a number of years on Aramac Station in Queensland, where she was born. In November 1914 the Nickolls
family left Aramac and went to live in Melbourne where, in the following year, Ted Nickolls died of pneumonia at age 51 years.

"Beth said that she has interesting old photographs of the days at Aramac, one being a photo of the local Councillors, Ted Nickolls being one of them, on the occasion of the opening of the railway to Longreach. Another photo is of the first car
to belong to the Station, believed to be a Darracq or Chandler.

"In 1907 Margaret Murtho Pegler and Helene Pegler were married at a double wedding in Charleville and it was said that it was old A.H.Pegler's proudest moment when he walked down the aisle with a beautiful bride on each arm.

"Helene Pegler was named after a racehorse and now [1972?] her little Great-grand daughter, Kathlyn Helene, is quite unaware of her link with a one-time favourite."
