Green, Norman Leslie (b. 23 Oct 1905, d. 30 Oct 1976)
Note: Les Green's birth place is recorded as Roma when his father was managing Maryvale [Merivale] north of Mitchell Qld. The family settled in the Bulloo River district some time after 1912 when Ingeberry was purchased.
When Ingeberry was sold and Monamby [about 70 miles west of Charleville] was purchased in 1927 Les moved with the family. In 1936 he purchased adjoining Dempsey from Tim Dwyer. In the 1950s he built a new homestead "of the same design as
Monamby but on high blocks as flooding from the Paroo River was often a problem".
After his mother died in 1947 Les and his brother Reg successfully ran Monamby and Dempsey in partnership. Monamby was sold to the Featherstonhaughs in the 1950s and Dempsey was sold to Bob Hourn in 1961.
Herb King wrote that "I worked for Les for many years and liked him very much, a good straight man with a great love for his wife Nell and daughter June. He told me that his father was a very hard man to his sons and he decided that way was
not for his family".
Les's nephew Ken Green wrote his Reminiscences in 1997 in which he records several stories concerning Les and his brothers George and Reg. Les had a reputation of being a good fighter but he declined to take up boxing seriously. Ken has written
that on one occasion when Les and his wife were staying at Corones Hotel in Charleville they omitted to lock the door of their room when they went to bed one night. In the early hours of the morning three men entered the room, assumably to
commit robbery. Les got out of bed and "got stuck into them", gave them all a hiding and knocked them to the floor. He dragged one out into the corridor and told the other two to get up and go or he would give them some more. They all staggered
off.
Norman Leslie Green died at Bundaberg Qld on 30 October 1976.

Note: While Richardsons became part of the Green Family Tree by Elizabeth's marriage to Norman Leslie Green, marriages of Richardson sisters increased existing branches -
Margaret Irene married a Crowe - elsewhere there is record of a Crowe marrying George Ernest Green;
Maisie Gertrude married a Clutterbuck - elsewhere there is record of a Clutterbuck marrying Kenneth George Green.
The Hall family can be brought into the Tree structure also through the marriage of Doris Margaret Mary Richardson and Ruby Florence Richardson to two Halls; Halls are linked to the Macnamaras and the roundabout continues by the Macnamaras
being linked to the Crowes.
The Richardson Family Tree and History are in a separate file.

Note: Ernest Green was the second son of William Benjamin Green and Elizabeth Green [nee Alford].He was born on Mondure Station on 3 April 1863. Tutors at the Station conducted his early schooling; a family move to Toowoomba, apparently in the late
1870s as a brother and a sister were born in that town in 1876 and 1878, resulted in him completing his education there. He left school and home at age 17 years and commenced work as a stockman at Boonara Station, near Kilkivan township.
After six years work at Boonara, during which time he rose to the position of Head Stockman, Ernest left and rode west with his elder brother William James [Willie] Green. Stock work was found at Mount Marlow Station near Windorah, then
Warnambool Downs south of Winton. From that Station Ernest and Willie drove 250 bullocks south to Bourke NSW
[about 900 km] and trucked them by rail to Sydney saleyards.
Ernest returned to Mount Marlow for a further period of time then rode back to the Darling Downs to revisit his mother and sisters who were living at Toowoomba. This was about 1886.
Ernest's next job was breaking horses at Booubyjan Station in the South Burnett District, then Head Stockman at Wigton Station south of Gayndah. In 1892, after six years there, he left and took up management of Myall Grove Station on the
Condamine River south of Miles, for the Queensland National Bank. But before finishing up at Wigton Ernest was employed by the owner, J.H.Fox, to drove 550 bullocks south to the mouth of the Richmond River in NSW [about 400 km each way] where
the town of Ballina is now situated.
While managing Myall Grove Ernest married Sarah Elizabeth Broadbent. The ceremony was conducted in All Saints Church of England, Wickham Terrace, Brisbane and the church register reads that on 18 February 1896 Thomas Ernest Green, Bachelor,
born at Mondure, Burnett Qld, occupation Station Manager, age 32, residing at Myall Grove, Condamine River, parents William Benjamin Green, Squatter and Elizabeth Alford married Sarah Elizabeth Broadbent, Spinster, born at Sydney NSW,
no occupation, age 21, residing at Hendra, parents John Broadbent, Grazier and Sarah Ann Entwistle. The bride and groom signed the register; witnesses were John A. Green [brother of the groom] and John Broadbent [father of the bride]. The
Officiating Minister was Geo. A.M.Pringle. The couple's first child, Elsie Elizabeth Green, was born on 21 November 1896 at Gympie Qld.
The Q.N.Bank sold Myall Grove about 1899 and after six years managing that run Ernest and his family moved to Brisbane where he found work in and around that city.
1903 saw him sought out by Mr. Fox to return to Wigton as Manager, which position he accepted and occupied until the run was sold 35 years later. While on that Station Ernest's daughter Elsie Elizabeth died, in 1903, but in 1912 he and Sara
were blessed with the birth of another daughter, Doris Entwistle Alford Green.
At the time of the sale of Wigton Mr. Fox had another run nearby - Hillcroft - which he decided to have cut up into small holdings and sold. Ernest carried out that whole operation and acquired for himself, jointly with his son-in-law, Francis
Stumm Elworthy, the prime holding of 1100 acres on which stood all the Station's improvements, including a stately residence.
Ernest was 77 years old at that time. He remained on Hillcroft until he died on 11 January 1951 aged 87 years and 9 months. He was buried at Wondai Qld. Sarah Elizabeth died in 1948 at Wondai.
A brief biography appears in Fox's History of Queensland, Volume II, issued 1922. Ernest's Memoirs are filed in the Stockman's Hall of Fame Library at Longreach where he is registered as an Unsung Hero of the Outback for services rendered to
the pioneering of Queensland. Four of his brothers, Willie, Charles, Fred and Warwick, are similarly registered. Ernest's Memoirs are also in the State Oxley Library in Brisbane. In those Memoirs Ernest recounts an experience he had when in his
teens living in Toowoomba. He "played marbles" with a young Prince who was visiting that town and who later became King George V. An explanation of the circumstances of this unusual incident has been added to Ernest's Memoirs.
Ernest and Sarah's daughter Doris Entwistle Alford Green was born on 9 March 1912 at Gayndah Qld. On 19 September 1934 she married Francis Stumm Elworthy [born 13 November 1911 at Gympie] in Brisbane. They had children Ann Elizabeth born 12
November 1935 at Gympie, Susan Frances Stumm born 20 June 1939 at Wondai, Doris Gillian Margaret born 3 October 1942 at Wondai and John William born 12 December 1945 at Wondai.
Francis Elworthy died at Texas Qld. on 12 February 1953. In 1961 Doris married Graham Davies-Graham in Brisbane. Doris died in Brisbane on 1 November 1995.
Death Notice - Late of Hillcroft, Wondai, died at Wondai Hospital on 11 January 1951 in his 88th year. Father of Doris [Mrs F.S.Elworthy], Hillcroft, Wondai. Managed Wigton and Hillcroft Stations for 60 years. Intered at Wondai Cemetery 13

An obituary appears in a book - Thomas Alford 1838-1864 - which is filed at the NSW State Library.
