Note: These Notes are based on extracts from the book "From Clancy's Day to Mine" by Norman Macnamara. In that book the writer tells the story of his pioneer ancestors and claims that Banjo Paterson's Clancy of the Overflow was based on his
Grandfather Thomas Michael Macnamara and the Macnamara's first property, called The Overflow", which was situated on the north side of the Murrimbidge River.
Thomas Michael Macnamara, better known to his friends as Clancy, moved his family [wife Teresa Mary and three young children] from NSW into Queensland by covered wagonette in February 1888. Searches show his wife to have been Teresa Mary Troy
and the children to have been Ilus Augustina Thomas Macnamara born 1882, Lilly C.M. Macnamara born1884 and Kate M.G. Macnamara born 1886. Searches also show that there had been two other children in that family - Francis Joseph Macnamara born
1880 died 1881 and Margaret Macnamara born 1882 died 1882,
The family settled at Eulo where Thomas bought a butcher's shop. This was sold after about two years and Thomas took up a selection near the junction of Bow Creek and Paroo River, a few miles above Eulo.....and called it Cameroo. He ran a small
dairy with cattle and sheep and also got a droving plant together and went droving in his spare time.
Searches show that children born to Thomas and Teresa after settling in Queensland were -
Michael Patrick Athanasius born 30 April 1888
Violet Mary born 24 July 1889
Louis Bryan born 14 March 1893
Owen Roe born 11 September 1895
Dorothy Blanche born 6 July 1899
Norman Macnamara further writes in his book that Ilus Macnamara married in 1913 by which time the family had mostly grown up and were quite scattered "so they decided to move, taking all their stock, and to make tracks for the north where there
were bigger holdings available.....they were to meet at South Comongin Station......when they all met up there would be over 100 horses, 1000 head of cattle, fowls, a few goats and a dog or two......the biggest exodus since the Duracks left
Thylungra for the Territory".
No record of birth, death or marrage has been found.
The following is an extract from The Great Treasury of Australian Folklore compiled by A.K.Macdougall -
"The descendants of Thomas Michael Macnamara, a drover known in the 1890s as Glancy, maintain that their Grandfather was the hero of Clancy of the Overflow. Glancy Macnamara.....got his nickname from his horse [The Glance]. He was born in 1848,
one of 13 children of an immigrant Irish couple. His father and Banjo Paterson's father shared a property at West Wyalong at one time and there the two young men would have met.
"Glancy Macnamara was well-known as a drover in the north of the state and lived to the ripe old age of 95 years. His Grandson Norman Macnamara remembers Glancy yarning about the good old days.....Norman maintains that The Man From Snowy River
was Jimmy Troy a noted horseman who married Glancy's sister Teresa". [according to searches Thomas Michael Macnamara married Teresa Mary Troy].
