John Williams arrived in Sydney on 18 November 1818 aboard the convict ship "Shipley" - Captain, L.W.Moncrief - Surgeon, Robert Espie.

He was aged 37 years, from Bristol, a seaman, convicted at Bristol [City] Quarter Sessions on 12 January 1818 and sentenced to 7 years [crime not recorded].

He was 5 feet 6 inches tall, dark sallow complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes.

In November 1828 census the John William family is listed as -

John - 51 years, free by servitude [sentence served], came by the "Shipley" in 1818, labourer, Petersham.

Jane - [Mary changed her name?] 45 years, Government servant [still serving sentence], came by the "Lord Sidmouth" in 1822 [1823?], Petersham.

Jane - 15 years, came Free, by the "Lord Sidmouth" in 1822 [1823?], Petersham. [This would have been the Jane Williams who married William Meers in 1829.She would have been 9 or 10 years of age when she accompanied her mother on the
convict ship. Children are not recorded on the ship's lists of convicts.]

John - 4 years, born in the colony 1823

Anne - 2 years, born in the colony 1826.

Williams, Mary (b. 1781, d. ?)

Note: Searching of convict records has disclosed -

Mary Williams arrived in Sydney on 27 February 1823 aboard the convict ship "Lord Sidmouth" - Captain, James Ferrier.

She was aged 40 years, native place Monmouth, convicted at Bristol [City} Sessions of Peace on 7 April 1821 and sentenced to 14 years [crime not recorded].

She was 4 feet 11.25 inches tall, flushed freckled complexion, black hair, brown eyes.

In the November 1828 census she is listed as part of the Williams family as Jane Williams, aged 45 years, Government servant [still serving sentence], came by the "Lord Sidmouth" in 1822 [ 1823?], Petersham.

Also listed in that census as part of the Williams family is a Jane Williams, aged 15 years, came Free, by the "Lord Sidmouth" in 1822 [1823?], Petersham. [This would have been the Jane Williams who married William Meers 2 in 1829. She would
have been 9 or 10 years of age when she accompanied her mother on the convict ship. Children are not recorded in the ship's list of convicts].
