Selke, Julius (b. , d. ?)
Note: There are some Notes held in Family History papers that mention the origin of Bodamba Station, which was west of Warwick. The Notes state that

"St George Gore and his brothers moved onto the Darling Downs close behind the Leslie brothers [the latter settled on the Downs in 1840].

"They passed North Toolburra and selected Yandilla[on the Condamine River]. St George Gore returned to Sydney and brought back his family, stock, a nurse girl and 2 ticket-of-leave men, by oxen drawn dray.

"William Gore was a Church of England minister who preached in the first church at Parramatta; St George Gore was a barrister; they were unhappy together; St George went exploring and took up Bodumba [west of Warwick] and relinquished a share
in Yandilla. He later bought Canning Creek [adjoining Bodamba to the west] where Andy Patterson was Manager.

"Robert Gore, a brother, became a partner of William's but he and his family drowned in a shipping disaster on the bar in the South Passage, Moreton Bay. William and his sons owned Yandilla for many years.

[from a map of the Darling Downs, published in 1864 and showing squattages and owners, Gore Brothers owned Yandilla, Tummaville and North Branch, which all adjoined; St George Gore owned Bodumba and Canal Creek, adjoining and at the southern
boundaries of the aforementioned runs.]

The Notes state that at Bodumba "Selke was overseer and Marley was bookkeeper" [an F. Marley was a witness to the marriage of Bertha Selke to John Alexander Green in 1905] "Selke had full charge of Bodumba" [this would have been Julius Selke,
father of Bertha Selke who had died prior to her wedding to John Green in 1905].

"Bodumba was sold to Mr Ezzy in 1876, then to Devine, then to Burke".

Record has been found that on 8 September 1871 Julius Selke obtained a Miner's Right No. 39996 for Talga, Canal Creek, Lucky Valley.[Canal Creek Station, on which the township of Leyburn grew, was on the north east boundary of Bodumba.

Julius Selke married Jane/June Eliza Perry in 1859. Jane Perry's parents were Captain Samuel Augustus Perry, who in 1846 was Deputy Surveyor-General [see Pioneering Into The Future] and Caroline Johnson.

Selke children were

Edward Augustus 28 June 1863, Fanny Mary 8 May 1865, Arthur Julius 29 May 1867 [died 1939], Charles Maurice 2 July 1868 [died 1907], Bertha 23 September 1870, William Alexander 20 September 1872, Frederick Henry 3 January 1874 and Walter 30

Hely, Hovenden (b. 1823, d. 8 Oct 1872)
Note: Born in 1823 at Tullamore, Ireland, Hovenden Hely was only a baby when his family arrived in Sydney that year on the Isabella. He was educated at Parramatta King's School then worked as a Clerk at the Colonial Secretary's office for two years.
In 1841 he was managing his late father's estate, "Wyoming", on the NSW Central Coast [he had died in 1836].

In 1846 Hovenden was a member of explorer Ludwig Leichhardt's second expedition, which left Moreton Bay and was headed for the Swan River in WA via North Queensland. The project was a failure however, the party only reaching about the Peak
Downs area and turning back to Brisbane.

Hovenden Hely then became a magistrate and appeared regularly on the local bench from 1849 to 1851. Next year he was chosen to lead a Government sponsored team to search for Leichhardt and his exploration party who had not been heard of since
heading west from the Darling Downs in 1848. However the search found no trace of the missing party.

Hely returned to magistrate duties and in 1856 - 57 he represented Northumberland and the Hunter District in NSW's first Legislative Assembly. 1858 saw him sailing to England on the Simla. In 1859 he married Gertrude Mary Church at Clapton,
Somerset and on returning to Queensland he carried on magistrate duties until he lost his Commission in 1862. He returned to the bench in 1864 but was declared bankrupt in 1865 [details of that bankruptcy are held in other Family History
writings.] Discharged in 1868 he again returned to the bench and remained in that role until his death in 1872.

Hovenden Hely died at 'Braithwaite', St Leonards, Sydney on 8 October 1872 and was buried in St Thomas's cemetery.

Children born to this couple were -

Frederick Strickland born 1860. In 1895 he married Ellen Frances Green.

Marion G. [Georgina or Gertrude?] born and died 1862?

Bingham Arbuthnot born 1862 died 1901.

Ethel G.M. [Gertrude Mary?] born 1864.

Arthur Leslie born 1866 died 1949. In 1893 he married Mary Godfrey Elizabeth Green.

George Lindsay Bucknell born 1868. In 1893 he married Sarah Ellen Holliman.

Charles Dickens died 1882

There is record of a child Alice E. Hely, born 1854, Infant Hely died 1854, parents Hovenden Hely and Elizabeth M. No marriage record has been found.

On 3 October 2005 a Sydney newspaper announced the death of Justice Peter Hely aged 61 years.

Green 1, William (b. , d. 1822)
Note: The oldest record found for William Green 1 was in the marriage register of St. Martin-in-the-Fields church, Middlesex, London. It reads -

" William Green of this Parish, a Bachelor, and Harriet Forster of the Minster of Chiswick in the same County, Spinster, a Minor, were married in this church by Licence this 22nd day of January 1803. Signed Raymond Rogers, Curate. This
wedding was solemnised between us, signed Wm Green and H. Forster. Witnesses R. Forster and Edmund Antrobus". It has been found that the latter was William Green's partner in their Tea Dealer business in London. Also he became an Executor
in William's Will.

Harriet was a daughter of Robert Forster and Mary whose children were all born in London and baptised at St. Nicholas church, Chiswick. .Whether the parents were married at that church has not been investigated. The Forster children were -

Sophia, born 30 December 1783, baptised 25 January 1784

Elizabeth, born 22 September 1785, baptised 19 October 1785

Harriet, born 11 December 1786, baptised 7 January 1787

Edward, born 9 March 1789, baptised 29 March 1789

Richard Wyndham, born 25 September 1791,baptised 23 October 1791

Harriet had just turned 16 Years when she married William Green 1.

Children born to William and Harriet were all baptised at St. Martin-in-the-Fields church - William, born 30 March 1804, baptised 3 May 1804, Harriet, born 4 January 1806, baptised 8 February 1806, John, born 15 July 1807, baptised 10 August
1807, Charles Henry, baptised 21 December 1816.

Church records of the first three births/baptisms showed parents' names but no address or occupation. However the entry for the baptism of Charles Henry Green in 1816 showed the parents' names, the father's occupation as Tea

Dealer and address as Strand.

William Green 1 signed his Last Will and Testament on 19 August 1816; Administration was granted on 8 October 1822. Appointed as Executors were his wife Harriett, his Tea Dealership partner Edmund Antrobus [who was a Witness at William's
wedding in 1803] and a surgeon friend Charles Woods of Princes Street, Hanover Square, London.

Searching for record of William's death in 1822 has resulted in 2 William Greens being found to have been buried during that year - one at St Botolph, Aldgate and one at Bunhill Fields. Neither appears likely for our records.

William left his "household goods and furniture, plate, linen, books, china and glass" to his wife, plus immediate payment of 200 pounds. His other assets consisting of 2 freehold properties at Princes Square, Ratcliff Highway, London, 2
leasehold properties at Camberwell, Surrey, and investments, were to be sold and all proceeds were to be invested in Public Stocks or Government Securities, held in Trust by Trustees Antrobus and Woods and Interest, Dividends etc were to be
paid to Harriett Green "for the term of her natural life", provided she remain "a widow and unmarried".

If Harriett remarried or after her death, the Estate was to pass on to children William, John, Harriett and Charles after they reached 21 years of age . If Harriett remarried or died and if the 4 children died before reaching the age of 21
years, the Estate was to pass on to William's sister Maria Green.

Harriett Green [nee Forster] - Harriett was born on 11 December 1786 and had just turned 16 when she married William on 22 January 1803. She was 29 when the Will was signed in 1816 and 35 when William died in 1822. It is not known whether she
remarried; she might have died during the Quarter ending March 1855 - see Notes on Harriet's Person Sheet.

Maria Green - she was a potential beneficiary in William's Estate but establishing a brother/sister relationship between her and William has not been achieved.

Records show that the Greens had long ties to St Martin-in-the-Fields church in Middlesex, London. Records also show that the Greens customarily named their first son after his father - William Green 1s first son was named William, the latter's
first son was named William Benjamin, his first son was William James and his first son was William Richard.

There is also evidence that The Greens appeared to name their first daughter after her mother - William Green 1s first daughter was named Harriet after her mother; William Green 2 didn't have a daughter, only a son whose first daughter was
named Mary [after her Grandmother] Godfrey [no explanation] Elizabeth [after her mother and Grandmother].

Using the first son/father's name theory in endeavouring to trace William Green 1s origin, searches have found that a William Green was baptised at St Martins on 21 April 1782, parents William Green and Elizabeth. A William Green married
Elizabeth Davis at St Martins on 24 April 1774. Records also show a Maria Green was baptised at St Martins on 11 April 1784, parents William Green and Elizabeth. However if these records are adopted, William [described in his Marriage
Certificate as a Bachelor] does not appear to have reched the age of 21 years when he married Harriet Forster under licence [she was 16] on 22 January 1803.

Records show another Maria Green who was baptised at St Martins on 28 December 1796, parents Charles Green and Maria. Maybe the first daughter/mother's name theory could be applied but record of the parents' marriage has not been found nor has
record of a William Green having been born to the same parents as Maria's.

There are separate writings in the Family Tree and History about this Maria Green but a sister/brother relationship with William Green has not been established for either of the Marias researched.

Forster, Harriet (b. 11 Dec 1786, d. ?)
Note: Harriet Forster was born on 11 December 1786. She was only 16 years old when she married William Green 1 on 22 January 1803. Her children were born when she was 17, 19, 20 and 30 years of age. Harriet was 29 when her husband's Will was signed
in 1816; she was 35 when he died in 1822.

In William's Will he left his "household goods and furniture, plate, linen, books, china and glass" to Harriet, plus immediate payment of 200 pounds. His other assets consisting of 2 freehold properties at Princes Square, Ratcliffe Highway,
London, 2 leasehold properties at Camberwell, Surrey, and investments were to be sold and proceeds were to be reinvested and Interest, Dividends etc were to be paid to Harriet "for the term of her natural life", provided she remain "a widow and
unmarried".

If Harriet remarried or after her death, the Estate was to pass on to her children William, John, Harriet and Charles after they reached 21 years of age. If Harriet remarried or died or if the 4 children died before reaching the age of 21
years, the Estate was to pass on to William's sister Maria Green.

It is not known whether Harriet remarried nor is it known when she died. Records show deaths of many Harriet Greens. Two of interest are during the first 3 months of 1855 - during the Quarter ending March 1855.

At the commencement of 1855 Harriet's youngest son Charles Henry Green was living at Bathurst NSW. In June of that year he took one year's leave of absence from the prestegious position of Commissioner for Crown Lands Goldfields District in
order to return to England. Health reasons were given as the reason for his departure but he might also have wished to return to his homeland to inherit his share of his deceased parents' Estate as a result of his mother's demise.

If Harriet had in fact died in early 1855 [she would have been about 69 years of age then] there would have been sufficient time for Charles Henry, as a beneficiary of the Estate, to have received notification of her death to enable him to
leave Australia in June to return to England to claim his inheritance.

Charles Henry arrived back in Australia in September 1856 accompanied by his brother William [his wife Mary and son William Benjamin] who would have also been a beneficiary of William Green 1s Estate following Harriet's death. Before departing
from Australia and returning to England [date not known] brother William purchased Mondure Station on which his son William Benjamin was able to settle and remain in this new colony as a permanent citizen.

Forster, Robert (b. , d. ?)
Note: In 1989 I wrote to Greater London Record Office and Library, 40 Northampton Road, London enquiring about registration of the birth/baptism of Harriet Foster. I listed a number of churches in Chiswick [record of her marriage to William Green
stated she came from the Minster of Chiswick] hoping I could get a guide as to where to enquire next. A reply came back stating "of the churches listed only St Nicholas was in existence in the 18th century......the parish registers are kept at
the church, Chiswick Vicarage, The Mall, London".

I wrote to the Chiswick Vicarage and received birth and baptism dates for Harriet Forster and four other children of Robert and Mary Forster [R.Forster signed as witness to Harriet's marriage].

Information concerning the parents' marriage was not included in the letter from the Vicarage. I have assumed they were married there in 1782.
