Le Grand, Robert William (b. 1834, d. 30 Jul 1911)
Note: Information about the Le Grands has come from letters [one dated 1 April 1996 to Ena Reilly] and notes written by Leona [Kennedy?] who was described as a niece of Bertram and Abigail Le Grand and aged 89 years at time of writing in 1996.
Subsequent searching has disclosed some more detail.

"Robert William Le Grand was born [in England] in about 1834 into a well to do and well educated family. He arrived in Melbourne in 1851 when he would have been about 17 years of age. He took part in the gold rush in Bendigo in the 1850s and
was very successful".

"Returning to England after some years he became a contractor at Plaidstow, Essex, and also became interested in the grape growing/wine making industry, especially in France which was where his family roots were". Later information to hand has indicated that Germany was the home country of the Le Grands.

Searching of the 1841 England Census has found that a Robert Le Grand, aged 7 years, born about 1834 at Essex, England was living on a farm in the Civil Parish of Nazeing, District Epping, County Essex. Listed as residing at the same farm were
15 other men, women and children, none of whom were Le Grands.

The next Census which shows interesting infomation is 1861 - W. Le Grand aged 67 years, wife Mary aged 56 years and sons Robert aged 27 years and Alfred aged 17 years were all living at Plaidstow, West Ham. Birth places were recorded as "Not
known, Middlesex".

The 1871 Census shows Robert W. [birth place Middlesex, London], a Builder, Decorator, living at Plaidstow, West Ham with his wife Ann C. [birth place Middlesex, Aldgate] and sons Albert N. and Sydney R. [both born at Essex, Plaidstow]. Living
at the same address was Rosa A. Yerbury, a Fancy Repository Ap, aged 23 years, sister of Ann C. Le Grand and born at Middlesex Aldgate.

Further searching has confirmed that Robert married Ann Caroline Yerbury at West Hampshire, London, during the Quarter ending June 1867 and three sons were born - Albert Napoleon, during Quarter ending June 1868, Sydney Robert, during Quarter
ending September 1869 and Moritz Christian, during Quarter ending June 1871, all at West Hampshire.

The family sailed from London on the Royal Dane on 18 August 1871 and berthed at Moreton Bay on 2 December 1871. The ship's passenger list records their ages as 37 years,32, 3, 2 and less than 1 year. Moritz Christian would have been only a few
months old at that time. Also listed as a family member was Rosa , age 24 years, but subsequent searching revealed that this was Rosa Alice Yerbury, a sister of Ann C. Le Grand.

After living for a while in the Ipswich [Harrisville] district the family "settled in Milbong early in 1873 on 840 acres" where Robert commenced grape growing and wine making. Despite unsuitable weather conditions he "persevered and produced
much wine of good quality for some years and did alright ".However a major setback occurred when Robert's wife, Ann Caroline, died unexpectedly on 31 December 1883, aged only 44 years, leaving Robert with seven boys aged between 15 years and
less than 3 years. "After some time his sister Rosa [ actually sister-in-law] left her home and lifestyle and commenced living with the family.......with help to do the housework".

"In about 1890 Robert turned to farming and was said to have been the first to import Spanish Merino sheep into Queensland. He retired in 1904 and his son Bertram bought his land."

Robert William Le Grand died at Ipswich on 30 July 1911 aged 77 years. He was buried in the same grave as his wife Ann Caroline, Ipswich Cemetry, Church of England Section B, Section 28, Row 27.

In 2017 Carolyn Le Grand [daughter in law of Bertram Le Grand?] supplied a memory stick containing 2 diaries of Robert William Le Grand, one concerning a journey he took in 1865 from London through France and Germany and return [a copy is held in Sellwood family files], the other concerning a similar journey in Europe on honeymoon with his wife in 1867.

Coleman, George (b. 1845, d. 11 Jul 1918)
Note: Information recorded in ancestry computer records at the NSW State Library and submitted by Peter Bates of 7 Osborne Street, Port Auguster 5700, is that -

"John Henry Coleman was a ganger with the South Australian Railways. His parents were George and Elizabeth Bates.

"George Coleman was a miner in Cornwall, England, and although it is believed he was born there, searches have not confirmed this. However a George Coleman appears in records as either having been born at Kapunda S.A. in 1853 or having arrived
at/ lived in that town during that year".

Subsequent searching of records has found that George Coleman, aged 28 Years [father Charles Coleman], married Ellen Bray, aged 21 years [father John Bray], at the residence of J. Hancock, Moonta, Daly District S.A. on 15 November 1873.

This would make George born about 1845 and Ellen born about 1852. No record of either birth has been found.
